Martin Guptill ruled out of remaining England series with thumb injury

New Zealand cricketer Martin Guptill has been dropped out of the remainder of England's tour of the country after it was revealed that he required a thumb surgery.

New Zealand Cricket has confirmed that Guptill, who is already suffering from a strained left hamstring, had ligament damage to his left thumb during a training session earlier this month, and will undergo surgery next week, reports.

According to Black Caps physiotherapist Paul Close, although Guptill could continue playing in the short term with the thumb injury he needed to have surgery at some point.

Close added that the thumb injury is expected to sideline him for almost eight weeks so that he can target a return for the tour of England which starts with a warm-up match against Guptill's county side, Derbyshire, on May 4.

Guptill averaged 50 in the three-match Twenty20 series and after his match-winning knock in Hamilton looked to be returning to his best form, the report added. (ANI)
