Kumar Sangakkara poised to join 10,000 club

Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara is poised to join the exclusive 10,000-run club in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne against Australia, a landmark he plans to build on.

The prolific batsman needs just 40 more runs in his 115th Test to join the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis to complete the milestone.

Cricket legend Kapil Dev remembers what it was like playing for his country against India's bitter rival, Pakistan, when he made his international debut in 1978: a bowler was expected to aim at the batsman's body.
"When I played my first series against Pakistan, it did look like a war," India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain said during a recent TV panel discussion. "In our time, we were expected more to harm the Pakistani players than win a match."

Sachin Tendulkar retires from ODIs

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar on Sunday announced his retirement from one-day cricket after scoring a record-breaking 49 centuries in the 50-over format.

"I have decided to retire from the one-day format of the game," Tendulkar said in a statement.

"I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of being part of a World Cup winning Indian team (in 2011)," the 39-year-old added.

"I am eternally grateful to all my well-wishers for their unconditional support and love over the years."

IPL 6: Players auction on Feb 3, 2013

The players auction for the sixth season of the IPL will be held on February 3, 2013 at an undecided venue, the league’s chief executive Raman Sundar tweeted on Friday. The auction was initially believed to be scheduled for January 12, but has been postponed due to a clash with India’s ODI series against England which runs from January 11-27.
On Friday, the BCCI announced the full schedule of the 2013 season which will run from April 3 to May 26 across 11 venues in India. Kolkata Knight Riders, the current IPL champions, and Delhi Daredevils will play each other on the opening of the sixth season of the IPL on April 3 at Eden Gardens.

Playing on the famous bullet-dodging scene, featuring Keanu Reeves, in The Matrix, the technology will allow the network's production crew to give viewers a slow-motion, rotational panoramic view of replayed moments, whether they be wickets, pull shots or mid-pitch confrontations.

Bangladesh becomes first international team to agree to tour Pakistan

Bangladesh has become the first team to agree to tour Pakistan for a cricket series next month since armed militants attacked the Sri Lanka team in Lahore in March, 2009.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf made the announcement on Friday.
"The Bangladesh board has conveyed to us their team's visit is confirmed and they have also got approval from their board members," quoted Ashraf, as saying to Pakistani news channel.

Brendon McCullum backs misfiring Kiwis after South Africa rout

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum was unapologetic for his team's approach after South Africa trounced them by eight wickets with 47 balls to spare in the first Twenty20 international on Friday.

Fast bowler Rory Kleinveldt took two early wickets to start a slide from which New Zealand never recovered.

Kleinveldt took the key wickets of Rob Nicol and McCullum before he finished with three for 18 to capture the man of the match award.

Sachin Tendulkar wants to play in ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar is not hanging up his boots yet. The legend has informed the selectors that he is available for selection for the ODI series against Pakistan and England, which will help him prepare for the Test series against Australia.

Speculation about his retirement was rife following Tendulkar’s extended run of poor form. In the four Tests against England, he made only one half- century – 76 in the second Test in Kolkata.

Sources said Tendulkar has spoken to chief selector Sandeep Patil, making himself available for the two backto- back ODI series.

South Africa beat New Zealand by 8 wickets

South Africa thrashed the touring New Zealand team with a one-sided eight-wicket victory in the first of three Twetnty20 Internationals on Friday.

The hosts dismissed their hapless opponents for just 86 before captain Faf du Plessis (38 not out) and debutant Quinton de Kock (28 not out) wrapped the game up with 7.5 overs to spare following the early dismissals of openers Richard Levi and Henry Davids, Sport24 reports.

Ricky Ponting backs 'thinking cricketer' Shane Watson's captaincy skills

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has backed Shane Watson to do a fine job if he has to captain Australia against Sri Lanka in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, as long as he doesn't think too much.

Michael Clarke is hopeful of overcoming a hamstring injury to lead the team into the second Test against Sri Lanka, but he has some work to do to prove his fitness.
